Frequently asked

The questions every Southern Utah owner asks.

Nothing here replaces the consult — but it should clear the big ones.

How much does training cost?
We'll give you pricing on the in-home consult because every plan is customized. What we can tell you now: all programs include the physical gear — slow-feeder bowls, treat pouches, toys, leashes, and the e-collar. Most trainers in Southern Utah make you buy that separately. We don't.
How long does training actually take?
Board & Train transformations run 2–4 weeks. Private programs run 4–8 sessions over roughly the same window. Group class is ongoing — that's the point. Reactivity and service-dog work take longer; we'll be honest about timelines on the consult.
What's the "Balanced Training Method"?
It means we don't pick a side of the dog-training internet war. We use positive reinforcement for new behaviors — premium freeze-dried treats, single-ingredient chicken and salmon — and we use clear, fair correction (including e-collar work) for safety and reliability. The method is the outcome: a dog you can trust off-leash, in every environment.
Will this work for my [puppy / rescue / reactive / stubborn] dog?
Almost certainly. Our testimonials run the gamut: rescue English Setter the family wasn't sure they could keep, a fear-reactive Newfypoo who's now a demo dog, Aussies, Yorkies, Bernedoodles, Cavapoos. The free in-home consult is where we tell you honestly whether we're the right fit for your dog's specific situation.
Do you actually come to my home for the consultation?
Yes. Every time. It's the most important hour in the whole process — we watch your dog in the exact environment they'll need to succeed in. We serve St. George, Cedar City, and everything in between (Washington, Hurricane, Ivins, Santa Clara, La Verkin, Kanab). Out-of-town clients are welcome too.
What happens after the program ends?
You're invited to the community. Weekly group class. Monthly meetups. Seasonal events. Most clients stay for years — the group class is where the training keeps working, and where a lot of them accidentally find their people.
Where does my dog stay during Board & Train?
In our home as part of the family — not a kennel. Your dog sleeps in a crate in our house, relaxes with us, and trains in real environments (parks, stores, downtown) every day. Living with us is what makes the training hold in a real household.
Do you use shock collars or e-collars?
We use modern e-collar technology as a communication tool when it's the right fit — a tap on the shoulder at a distance, not punishment. It's what allows reliable off-leash freedom in high-distraction environments. We introduce it carefully and low, and explain exactly how and why at the consultation. Not every dog needs one.
My dog is reactive or aggressive — can you actually help?
Reactivity and aggression are our specialty; many clients come to us after other trainers couldn't help. At the free consultation we evaluate your specific case and tell you honestly whether we're the right fit and which program makes sense. We won't take a dog we don't believe we can help.
What's included in the free consultation?
A no-pressure, in-home evaluation. We meet your dog in your environment, watch the behaviors you're dealing with, answer your questions, and give you a clear recommendation and exact pricing — zero obligation. Plenty of people book just to get a plan.
Do you train service dogs?
Yes. We offer service dog training with individual assessment — task-specific work for mobility, psychiatric, and medical-alert needs, plus public-access behavior. Timelines are assessed case by case and mapped out at the consultation.
How will I know how my dog is doing during Board & Train?
Daily photo and video updates. You'll see exactly what your dog is working on and how they're progressing, and you can text us anytime — you're never out of the loop.
Do you offer group classes?
Yes — our group class runs every other Saturday and is a great way to build real-world obedience around other dogs and people. You're welcome to observe a class first; current dates are on the Calendar page.
What areas do you serve?
Southern Utah — St. George and surrounding cities (Washington, Santa Clara, Ivins, Hurricane and more) plus Cedar City. Not sure if we reach you? Give us a call and we'll let you know.
Do you guarantee results?
We guarantee our commitment, effort, and expertise, and we don't take dogs we don't believe we can help. Training is a partnership — results also depend on you following through at home, which is why owner transition and lifetime support are built into every program.
How do I get started?
Book your free in-home consultation — we text back within two business hours. We'll evaluate your dog, recommend the right program, and give you a clear plan and price. Call or text (435) 525-3493 to set it up.
